Post-Abortion
Syndrome |
Abortion can have many negative effects on a woman's
life and health. Some of these complications can linger
for years after an abortion. Extensive
|
|
research
into complications of abortion has been difficult
because most abortion clinics do not provide follow-up
exams; many long term effects do not show up for years;
|
|
|
and
treatment for complications is often sought
away from the abortionist or abortion facility.
However, there is growing evidence from researchers
that an abortion can set off a complex reaction,
including physical and
|
psychological
aftereffects, which can have a powerful, negative
impact on a woman's life. |

|
PHYSICAL
AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF ABORTION
|
More
than 100 physical complications have been associated
with abortion. Immediate physical effects include: infection,
hemorrhage, cervical damage, damage to other internal
organs, perforation of the uterus, abdominal pain, menstrual
irregularity, headaches, dizziness, and blood clots.
In some cases, today's so-called "safe, legal"
abortions can result in death. Long-term physical effects
include: sterility, stillbirth, miscarriage of future
children, and premature births of subsequent children,
(which can lead to many complications in newborns).
Secondary health problems associated with abortion are
now being studied. Abortion can lead to an increase
in substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, tobacco, etc.),
which has man well-known negative health consequences.
Many women suffer from psychological aftereffects of
abortion. These complications are called post-abortion
syndrome, or PAS. Some of the behavior which mark PAS
are: recurrent memories, dreams and repetitions of the
abortion experience; avoidance of emotional attachment;
relationship problems; sleep disturbances; guilt about
surviving when the unborn child died; memory impairment;
hostile outbursts; suicidal thoughts or actions; and
substance abuse. Some women begin to suffer from PAS
right after their abortions; for others, the symptoms
may mot begin to appear for many months or years after
the abortion. Often, a major life event, such as the
birth of another child, can trigger PAS in a woman.
The negative psychological effects of abortion can also
be seen in fathers, grandparents and siblings. Even
medical personnel involved in the abortion industry
have reported that they suffered from negative effects. |

If
you know a woman who has had an abortion, |
listen
in love, both of you know that you can not back up time
and prevent her from terminating her child, but you
can help her find the healing she , (or he in the case
of the father) needs. She needs your support, so listen
with out judging as she releases her pain and grief.
Be honest and help her heal in a healthy way, do not
shield her form the pain. She needs to get it all out
and grieve in a natural way. She has to grieve for her
lost child, a grief that is compounded by her guilt
in making the decision to terminate her child. |
|
|
HELP
HER FORGIVE HERSELF |
Help
her realize that she may not have made the decision
alone but others may have played a part in helping her
terminating her child. Perhaps her spouse, boyfriend,
parents, or friends pressured her to have the abortion.
These facts help her see how overwhelmed she may have
been without proper support from others. She also made
the decision when her body was experiencing the hormonal
changes or pregnancy. She may feel bitter towards those
associated with the abortion, or resent those who withheld
support. She may be angry with those who worked at the
abortion facility, and feel she was misled or victimized.
In the abortion clinic, the woman is given no understanding
of fetal development or the risk or serious side effects.
Encourage her to talk about and to work though her decision
to terminate her child. It takes courage to deal with
major problems. Encourage her to give herself credit.
Tell her that peace and light wait on the other side
of her pain. |
