Abortion
Pill Will No Longer Be Distributed in Germany |
Berlin,
Germany -- Femagen Arzneimittel, distributors of the
abortion pill Mifegyne, said the danger abortion drug
will be pulled from the German market at the end of
the year due to poor sales. A Femagen spokesperson said
that too few abortion practitioners were using the dangerous
drug, since abortion practitioners receive higher payments
from the government for surgical abortions than for
prescribing the RU 486 drug. Reimbursement for Mifegyne
did not cover abortion practitioners' costs to administer
the dangeorus drug, leading to low demand and "heavy
losses" for Femagen. Mifegyne was introduced in Germany
in November 1999, following "years of debate about the
ethics" of the abortion pill. Exelgyn, the abortion
pill's French manufacturer, is undecided on whether
it will continue to make the dangerous abortion drug
available through another distributor. |
